Here is my suggestion for your .bash_profile or .bashrc file:

KDEDIRS=/home/ewalstad/var/kdepim
PATH=/home/ewalstad/var/kdepim/bin:$PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/ewalstad/var/kdepim/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export KDEDIRS PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH
