Just some further information here.

The file structure used by Evolution is ~/.evolution/mail/local/*.sbd

The .sbd extension is for each directory within the mail structure. 

In Kontact, the import procedure ->Tools->Import Messages does not seem
to recognise the .sbd file extension. The result is that my final
attempt to import all my information from Evolution has stalled which
leaves me frustratingly using both Evolution and KDE at the same time.
