That's what QStyleSheet::convertFromPlainText does, according to the 
documentation. The rest of the code is needed to show the correct tooltip, as 
Qt doesn't expose this functionality. In large part, it is copied from the Qt 
sourcecode. I just had to adapt the way to decide if a tooltip should be 
shown or not, because I had no access to private data structures in 
QListView.
If you have another way to modify the tooltip for cells that don't fit, I'm 
curious to see how.
