Yes, the current behaviour will be the default.

Right.

Not with the current code. There is no way to ask knotify for the mechanism 
the user chose. Well, not when I last looked at it. Either this would have to 
be added or we would have to fork knotify. I would strongly object against 
the latter.

I will try and come up with a solution that integrates all this in a useful 
manner.
