You are right (see below). I guess this problem is somehow related to the 
hardware. I've installed (from scratch) the save distribution on an old PC 
(Asus TX97-E, K6-2 step12) and I've not been able to reproduce the problem. 
I've installed (from scratch) the distribution on a empty partition of my 
linux box (Asus A7V33, XP1800+) and I reproduced the problem...
