E.g. look at http://reinhold.kainhofer.com/Linux/pictures/KOrg_TodoList.png To find the non-finished items, you read one todo, and then instead of immediately finding the next unfinished item, your eye first has to go to the left side and scan for the next unchecked mark. It's like scanning a huge randomly numbered list. Having a different font attribute for unifinished item that makes them look less important really helps a lot finding unfinished todos quickly.
