The symptoms make me suspect what many people compiling Kopete also 
experienced until we added a note about it, they are compiling to a path that 
is not looked at by the KDE environment. Looking at the compile info at 
www.kontact.org there's no mentioning of this caveat, but take a look at the 
bottom of

http://kopete.kde.org/index.php?page=cvs

('Installation tip'), or at the bottom of

http://koffice.kde.org/download/source.php

The notes there apply to any KDE application using the standard resource 
location API, i.e. also to Kontact.
