There is an IETF standard (ACAP, kinda like IMAP), which allows for remote update of calendars, bookmarks and other application configuration. Even if you want to do something different, they have some interesting experiences which are documented. This probably is slightly different to what you wanted, and an ACAP server is pretty complex, but there still might be some value.
