Is this a RH7.3? I had the same problem with RH7.3 /  KDE3.1(ASP) and 
tried all kinds of  stuff w/o any luck (I'm not a SW developer though), 
looks like those vars gets defined in some scripts.
However, I recently upgraded to RH9 and that solved the problem. I'm not 
suggesting an upgrade but maybe someone in this forum can give an 
explanation? I guess one main factor is that I went from gcc2.93 to gcc3.1

And BTW,  I like what I saw after compiling I must say:) Good job.
