The Palm Zire works very well with Kpilot with the 2.4.20 Mantel kernel. 
Earlier kernel 2.4.19 requires a patch and is not as stable. My system is:

kpilot 4.3.6(3_1 Branch)
pilot-link 0.11.5
kde 3.1.0
qt 3.1.1
kernel 2.4.20-27-4GB 

EVERYTHING WORKS from the pda in both directions with no crashes or lockups.
