And it will bloat KMail's code. This is exactly what we don't want.

Yes, they will, when the application startup time increases by 10 
µseconds. No, just kidding. The users probably won't notice this. But 
we, the developers, will notice the increased complexity of the code.

I had a look at the screenshots of both approaches and I have to admit 
that I really don't like your approach (resp. the second screenshot). 
The KOrganizer which is squeezed into the small message preview pane in 
KMail looks really awful. My preview pane is even smaller than the one 
in the screenshot. So it would look even more silly and be even more 
unusable on my machine.

See above. So far I prefer the Kaplan approach.

OTOH, things like the meeting announcement should probably really be 
shown directly in KMail (as in your first screenshot).
