if the .desktop file for the applet has a 
MimeTypes=image/jpeg;image/png;image/svg (etc..) then it should work right 
out of the box.

where the code could be improved is that if there is more than one possible 
match it just creates the first applet that matches. it really ought to ask 
which kind of applet to create in that case so one can choose.
