I exited KDE, replaced the glibc, cleared the cache and logged in again (measuring the same thing as you), but there was no speedup. I have SuSE 9.0, Kernel 2.4.21, and Athlon XP 2000+ with 768MB RAM (DDR 266) and a Maxtor40 GB HDD working in UDMA3 mode (if I use something above it freezes the PC when I watch TV), for which: "Timing buffered disk reads: 84 MB in 3.03 seconds = 27.76 MB/sec".
