A little common sense is required; if you choose to poll 30 sites with 10
items each what do you expect. Pick just a few sites with 3 or 4 items each.
Kde will open a slave for each site but they are only getting a small amount
of information and each slave only uses a few hundred K of memory so it
should not be crashing your system. Millions use it everyday with dialup
connections with no problems.
The slaves will hang around a while to see if anyone else wants them and then
they will terminate after their timeout. The only prob I see is if people set
their poll time so low that the slaves never time out. It is pointless to
poll sites every 5 or 10 minutes if their articles are lucky to change every
few hours (or days)
The only change I would make is to only allow a few slaves and let them go to
the next site when they have finished one; ie to queue the sites but most
people are to impatient for this.
As for the script you will see in tickers config that it can read apps on
stdout as well as rdf files so just do a simple shell script that reads site
after site and merges the files and let ticker read that; You wont have any
slaves then just one low bandwidth stream for a while.
