I would not say that: "ls -la" is heavy disk access.

Only after adding threads to the splay decoder it produces
clicks.
Maybe that xmms access /dev/dsp differently?
(select(...) versus write(...), etc...)
Artsd uses the select approach, and the yaf-xxx player the
(blocking) write.
But I don't know how threads may have an effect on the
way "how to access /dev/dsp".
