Could you explain a bit more what you are trying to catch there and why?

I mean: isNull() is unaffected by server crashes, so the only way how
isNull() could possibly be true is that you opened a file which can't be
decoded by artsd (because it doesn't exist or isn't supported). One might
say that it is the responsibility of applications to check whether they
could open a file before using it, ... or not?
