This might be related to a bug in XFree86, which caused the exact same problem. The bug was at least in XFree86 4.2.99.x, but it might have been in earlier versions (4.2.x, 4.1.x) as well. This affects all multi-threaded X11 applications and it locks up at least twm/xterm as well as Noatun/xine. XFree86 4.3.0 is not affected.
