We definitely need an easy to access possibility to plug i= n=20 > codecs for alls those funky sound and video formats. I'm all against=20 > burdening this tedious stuff onto application programmers. We haven't discussed video yet, but we need this too, of course. I don't th= ink=20 we need a "video server" as a standalone process, we already have X, but we= =20 need an easy way to blit images into the screen, ideally a KVideoWidget (i.= e.=20 something embeddable), using every form of hardware acceleration that's=20 offered to us. Please, think about how Arts in KDE is different from the original idea:=20 People started to mis-use arts for stuff it was never meant for. For exampl= e,=20 writing playobjects that are actually mp3 or ogg decoders. And then there w= as=20 streaming. Arts is clearly a kind of victim of one of the open source=20 communities brightest habits: excessive reuse. People started to extend it= =20 not because it was the best choice for the given task, but just because it= =20 was there. So whatever comes out of this reiterating discussions, keep in mind that yo= u=20 not only have to replace Arts as a soundserver, but also Arts as the presen= t=20 KDE Multimedia framework. And this involves Codecs and Video, too. regards, matze =2D-=20 Matthias Welwarsky =46achschaft Informatik FH Darmstadt Email: matze@stud.fbi.fh-darmstadt.de "all software sucks equally, but some software is more equal" --Boundary-02=_E08V+YEONf9ufHx Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQA+V80EANO+fpRuZ2IRAjyBAJ4uIa5Dv04hNsMcnQjjrjvGcFjGkgCfRpkt DRK2Dew2mraNWjyT7cDzsQQ= =cODY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Boundary-02=_E08V+YEONf9ufHx-- _______________________________________________ kde-multimedia mailing list kde-multimedia@mail.kde.org http://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-multimedia
