Good idea! I've started working on such a unified version for xine 0.9.x and 
xine 1.0.0.

Which version should be committed to HEAD? The newer version, for xine 1.0.0 
only, or perhaps the 'unified' version for xine 0.9.x and 1.0.0?

(the 'unified' version is a little messy, many #ifdefs)
