aRts is running because some programms need it for acoustic messages. Its
output device should be /dev/null in your case;)
Perhaps it can be stopped from autostarting, but I didn't try this as I use it
for my music.

aRtsd is something special as I realized. If artsd eats up cpu-time it
shouldn't try (in noatun for example) adding a effect (freeverb is good) and
then remove it again. For me cpu-usage of artsd then goes down. Just don't
ask me why...
