Hi,

Recently I installed KDE 2.2.1 from SuSE rpm's onto my laptop. For your
information my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 which runs suse
linux 7.2 with a 2.4.x kernel. My problem with the new KDE was that
sound didn't work anymore. I tried alot but it didn't seem to have any
effect. The message I got looking at the output from noatun in a konsole
windows was something like: unix_connect : can't connect to socket ...
Looking at the Kde-multimedia mailing list I found some remarks about
the same problem but not an answer. What I did find was a way to get
more information from artsd with the command artsd -l0. Looking at the
output I found something strange, on startup of the sound deamon arts
rates the different sound layers (OSS, ALSA, ...); OSS 'won', although I
used ALSA drivers. I knew in the properties section of arts there was an
entry where you could choose which sound layer arts would use, which
defaulted to auto. I then changed this entry and selected ALSA. I fired
noatun up once more ... it worked! No more unix_connect complaints.

I hope this may be useful for other people. I don't know if this is a
bug, or a known problem to the developers. If you (the developers) whish
to have more detailed information or a detailed print-out from artsd -l0
let me know (some instructions on whtat to do would be helpful).

Kind Regards and thanks for a great audio architecture,
