Felix, you are an optimist. :)
As far as I know FAT does not have inodes, which are specific to 
more traditional unix style file systems.
And if the "inodes" where depleted, I would not have been able to 
create files in other directories. Nevertheless I've tried it, maybe it does 
the right thing, but: no numbers for this partition with "df -i". 

So it either is a FAT limitation or
I may have hit a limitation of the vfat driver of Linux.
