One more thought about this whole issue: it could have been avoided completely if \
KDE4's predecessor of QStandardPaths had been preserved, or if a KStandardPaths class \
were an acceptable thing to reintroduce.

Such a class probably wouldn't even have to be part of an obligatory central KF5 \
library. It could be part of KCoreAddons, and I think it would be possible to use it \
even from code that doesn't do so explicitly with \
CPPFLAGS=-DQStandardPaths=KStandardPaths .
