I think you are under-estimating user's intelligence and over-estimating
their fickleness. Users don't expect splash screen to look the same any
more than they expect all cars to be the same colour. But they do expect
all cars to have the brake and accelerator pedals in the same place.

I would hope the number will decrease, not increase. There are very few
places where a splash screen is a good idea. Slow loading apps like Gimp
is one of them, but one can hope that KDE won't specialise in fat
bloated apps like Gimp.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the Gimp very much, but one would hope
that fat apps like it would be the exception, not the rule.
