I apologize for responding to my own post, but I did want to ask a question
before I take off for work. If anyone can shine some light on this off-line
for me, please do.

It's the "MacOS X" statement by Paul. When people denigrate Windows (and I
can think of plenty of reasons to do so) they tend to bring up the Mac as an
example of the way things should be done. I'm sorry, but I've used one and
that's just not the case. It's an OS with so little regard for the user that
its programmers truly believe that more than one mouse button is too
complicated for their target consumer. While this might be fine for my
grandmother, it isn't for me. I need something with a bit more substance,
and people who point to the Mac as the mythical Shangri-La of GUI design just
don't get it. And for those who look at OS design, let's remember that the
Mac is only now shedding its ancient cooperative multitasking architecture.

Speaking of OS X, I've seen a bunch of pretty pictures and write-ups on
Apple's website and elsewhere, but I have yet to find an example of this OS
which I can sit down at and actually use and test. It would be a bit rash,
don't you think, to decide suddenly to toss everything in for a system
(requiring a hardware purchase as well, mind you) sight unseen simply because
the SALESMAN told you it was better? Hello? While I respect the right of
people who make decisions that way, I have to question the logic of such a
decision.

Even if you're only looking at reducing Microsoft's market share, why in the
world would you choose a Mac? We're talking about a company that is invested
in heavily by Microsoft, and which depends on MS for its web browser and
primary office suite, in part because they failed in the competitive
marketplace.

Apple has some good ideas. KDE borrowed some of them (such as menus at the
top of screen), and if you like them, you can configure your system to use
them. But lately, the Mac has been more sizzle than steak, IMHO.

Sorry for the interruption. Now back to your regularly scheduled newslist.
