I believe its true, though maybe not very common. I saw a program, it was a few
years ago so the details are sketchy, where university students somewhere in Asia
were filmed performing very complex calculations without calculators during some
sort of examination. What was really amazing was that they were using the
principles of the abacus without actually having one in front of them. They just
visualized it in front of them and most of them actually moved there hands in front
of them as if the abacus were actually there. It was incredible to see. The while
point of the program was to show how these students could perform these
calculations as fast, if not faster than someone using a calclator.
