I think the "Split window" menu command is not as easy as it sounds.
I prefer the black handle; let me explain why.

If you get the "split window" by dragging the black handle along the
scrollbar, you immediately understand how to:
1) change the height of the split window
2) unsplit the window

If you get the "split window" by using a menu command, you don't know how
to:
1) unsplit the window. Add a menu command? Not easy. If you have TWO
splits, how do you know which split will be removed?
2) change the height. With the mouse? Ugly: you are separating the command
to create the split (menu command) from the command to resize the split
(mouse action)
