You didn't say which version of KDE. If you're using a 4.x version, you can 
run one of several system monitor plasmoids and use the Naked plasma theme to 
give it transparency. If you're running an earlier version of KDE, you could 
try Conky with an appropriate conkyrc file. There is a great example here:
