I tried there before my original post also, and didn't find any obvious way
to do it. The closest thing to obvious was the defaults button, which I
thought would cause the popup to reappear on disk insertion, where I could
make a correct selection, but that didn't happen.

This time I saw the medium types select list, which offers the opportunity to
select blank DVD, then select the choice I actually wanted in the first place
(do nothing) as the auto action. That seems to have fixed it. Thanks!
