I've seen similar behavior when the link (network) drops and is
then re-established.  Kmail has a socket open to the imap
server but will not re-establish this socket once the link goes
down and is reestablished.

I have to restart kmail, then it will all work again.
In my case, I can't get into any folder until I do this
even tho it may show message counts.

Upon re-starting kmail the message counts will
often change, which indicates to me that the counts
were probably stale.
