This will not be trivial for someone starting linux.  Potentially, you 
will have better luck getting a more recent distro with kde 3.X already 
installed.  You might try this:
http://www.redhat.com/fedora/

And yes, it is possible to run 2.1 and 3.0 on the same box and select 
between them in your window manager.
