Exactly.

I'm always having some minor problem or other, but nothing specific to
kcontrol that I can think of.

No apparent problem in this area.  Files are owned by me, group "users",
and most perms for contained *rc files are 600, with a few 644s
sprinkled around.  Directories . and .. are 755.

Personally I prefer getting at my files directly with bash rather than
using the clumsy GUI :-)
