Thanks, Tobias - unsetting $PROMPT_COMMAND solved the 'problem' just nicely.

Do you also happen to know whether dynamically resetting the title can 
be prevented? You can do that in a gnome-terminal profile.

i have:

PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne
"\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME%%.*}:${PWD/#$HOME/~}"; echo -ne "\007"'
PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '

i guess, it's the PROMPT_COMMAND that produces the window title.
