Laurie,
it may not be a KDE problem at all.  Can you browse with Mozilla / Firefox?

Can you ping the other machine on your network?

First you must determine if the connection to your network is OK.


As for starting and stopping network, you can use "service network start /
stop" in both Red Hat as well as Mandriva.  And if you're looking for a eas=
y
to use desktop distro try PCLinuxOS -- www.pclinuxos.com.  Its a derivative
of Mandriva with a lot of tweaks.
