They are 644 - viewed from the properties setting on the panel menu.  I can't 
view them from konsole, because I can't find where they are stored.

No, it's not.  There are some there, but not that one.

I've just realised that there are in fact two icons - one in kicker and one on 
the panel, and they are not the same in function.  The one I was originally 
trying to use brought up a display where my keyboard, Microsoft Internet 
keyboard displayed my keyboard correctly and listed the correct keys, but 
would not allow me to save any change.  The other icon brings up a very 
similar display, but my keyboard setting says that it has no image, and the 
keys listed are different.  I don't know if I can save from there, because 
clearly it is not the correct one for my keyboard, so I didn't try it.
