I don't have a manual entry for Xnest (nor xnest). I just wonder how it
happened by itself.

I run KDE with eight windows normally. For some reason window number
two was a Gnome desktop. Complete with my gnome background and gnome
desktop icons. Also, when I left clicked on the window I got a gnome
menu. Panels were still KDE.

All other 7 windows were KDE.

After logging off later and logging back on it was fine with no gnome
anywhere.

First off, I didn't even know that was possible. And, even though I saw
it - IS is possible? Can I set it up to run that way? That is, have
some windows KDE and some windows Gnome?

Of course you can! X comes with a driver called Xnest which is both a client
and a server for X that allows you to login to new sessions running as a
window on your desktop. They could be anything from Gnome to Enlightenment to
a basic twm session. The Xserver sees it as another user logged in (or it
could be the same user)
See : man Xnest
