Yes, I would suggest reading the /usr/src/linux/Documetation on CD-RW 
and DVDs.  Try while in that above directory - "grep cd-rw *"
Then try "less thefilename".  You will need to also look for "ide-scsi"
and/or ide-cd (which is new).

It would also be helpful if you included some more information.
Also the "cdrecord --scanbus" and see if they are found.
