oddly enough, doing a google search for your problem comes up with all sorts 
of helpful results:

  http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+forgot+root+password

please remember to google before asking questions on a mailing list.  there's 
no reason to fill up the list with questions that have been asked many times 
before.
