If you search at kde-look.org, there is a nice system tray app called Knemo 
that does what you want. This kind of thing would not show up on the task 
bar, which is only to show open applications.

It is there. When you're in file manager mode, go to "Settings" pulldown and 
you should see "Save view profile 'File Management'". At least, I have that 
in KDE 3.3.

In KDE 3.3, I don't even see how to get the view that you have, much less the 
one you want. You may want to take a look at Krusader at:

http://krusader.sourceforge.net/

It's a very sophisticated file manager for KDE. But there are some things it 
doesn't do as well as Konqueror. For the real answer on dates, I think you 
need "man ls". The command prompt will always be the most flexible.
