If anyone is interested in the solution to my ever-changing "sans" font, here 
is a mail I sent to JRT earlier....

Great news! I found the source of my problems. Just before modifying my fonts 
files, I had a look through syslog to make sure I had removed all the -devel 
packages that were suspect. Well, I noticed this....

rpmdrake[5198]: [RPM] libfreetype6-2.1.7-4plf installed
.
.
rpmdrake[5198]: [RPM] libfreetype6-2.1.7-4mdk removed

So I decided to rpm -Uvh libfreetype6-2.1.7-4mdk --force and hey presto! After 
resetting the X server, my fonts returned to normal. Looks like the plf 
package is modifying something.

Hope this is of benefit to someone.
