Where are you entering the command: 'startkde'?

That is, you must have started X BEFORE you can use that command so the only place you would 
normally enter that command would be in an Xterm running in BARE (no window manager) X.

That means that you can NOT enter it in a text mode console.  If you want to start KDE manually 
after login, the command should be:

	startx -e startkde

Or you can login as root and execute:

	kdm
