This dounds like either a hardware or a device driver problem to me.

Try just starting your system in console mode for a while and see if you have 
the same problem. If you see the same thing, then the problem is likely in 
the kernel driver for your setup.

If not, then try briniging up X without KDE or Gnome and see what happen. My 
guess is that you'll see the same thing as with KDE and that would indicate 
the Xserver  is having a problem
