Robyn,

Thanks for the reply.  I deleted /tmp and renamed .kde.  This time, I
got a gray screen and mouse cursor.. the splash dialog never appeared
and nothing further happened.  I still got the same messages at the
console, however, after I killed X.   Next idea?
