Speaking of which there is actually a kde control-centre module available 
that lets you change all sorts of environment variables with a GUI but you 
must read the readme when you install it because if I remember rightly you 
have to edit etc/profile or something to ensure it is called. It was either 
in kdenonbeta or on the kde.com apps area and had a really descriptive name 
like kenvironment or something but I cant remember.
