I have written a few thought about what first solution I am going to try for 
the filter dialog:

It's more or less a synthesis of what I have heard hear, except it allows 
directly the destruction of pixels ;) and I kept an horrizontal layout for 
the various widgets offered in the dialog, I am not convinced that :
filters list
------------
bookmark list
-----------
widget configuration

is a good idea.

So basically, the preview widget is gone, the dialog becomes non modal, the 
bookmark widget makes its apparition.
