Here's some background on the use of multiresolution TIFF files for
RenderMan mip-maps:
RenderDotC has used TIFF mip-maps since 1996 (back when BMRT used single
resolution TIFFs and PRMan only had it's proprietary texture format).
The format was essentially the same as it is now, except it used the
TIFFTAG_IMAGEDESCRIPTION string for *all* of the non-standard stuff
such as wrap modes, pattern, and fov.
In 2000, Phil Beffrey at Pixar did the development to bring TIFF textures
into PRMan. He improved upon our format by defining some private TIFF tags.
Years earlier, a block of 10 tag numbers had been allocated to Pixar but
only two, IMAGEFULLWIDTH and IMAGEFULLLENGTH, had actually been defined
(for crop windows, not for texture maps). Phil defined 5 of the other 8.
I worked with Phil to bring RenderDotC and PRMan into alignment. The
private tags made some things easier and we both wanted interoperability.
Larry Gritz copied Phil's work into BMRT. Because BMRT had more frequent
releases than PRMan, Pixar's new texture file format first appeared to the
public in BMRT.
Upon my request, Moritz invited Phil Beffrey to join this mailing list.
Apparently he declined. In lieu of his attendence, I'll include below
something Phil sent me in March 2000.

There's some trickiness associated with the format of each tile as the
data gets smaller than the tile size. Also, there's substantial trickiness
with the env cube style map. This'll all be documented when it ships
but I think you'll be able to quickly figure it out if you have a correct
sample image of each type. "Field of View Cotangent" is overloaded
depending on image type but setting it to 1.0 will generate reasonable
results - more when the doc is available.
