The file that I have seems somewhat inconsistent.  Let me see if I can
get something repeatable to you.

Ok.  I have changed my approach such that I am no longer using
adjustment layers.  I am merely converting the image to lab, adjusting
color levels, converting the image to rgb-8, and saving.  But I find
that what I see in Krita after the conversion to rgb-8 is definitely
not the same as what I see when I observe the saved image.  Using
KSnapshot, I've attached two files to demonstrate.
