Speed is probably best served by converting the layer to a QImage, scale that, 
and convert the thumbnail to a small 8-bit rgb layer. At this size, nobody is 
going to notice the difference between color models.

Filter gallery is a very nice name indeed; when Cyrille first checked the 
filter preview in, I thought he had coded a replacement for our quite bad 
preview widget...
