It's almost to nice-looking to do anything about, but as
http://www.valdyas.org/~boud/squares.png shows, there's some
weirdness going on with tile boundaries. I created the biggest
autobrush possible, and started to airbrush to produce this.

I'm not sure what's going on -- it must have something to do
with tile cobbling and compositing with an opacity < max, because
the same thing (of course) happens when painting with a transparent brush or 
pen.
