OS/Compiler notes: 

try the following
1)fire up kate
2)file open dialogue
3)change to ftp://<your_login>:<your_pass>@<your_server>
4)select a file to open
5)modify it
6)try to save it (not local)

doesn't work, right? ... well at least it doesnt work for me. i get the following:
